1. Select plants with 'berries' now - toyon, holly, cotoneaster, pyracantha, nandina,and arbutus. 2. Place tender plants indoors eg. a warm garage to protect from any freezes. 3. Keep the soil in existing beds moist. 4. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to lawns and flowerbeds. 5. Now is the time to transplant small shrubs and trees, while they are dormant. 6. Plant Pansies and Poppies which will bloom during January and February. 7. Use garden notes, photos and sketches to assess areas which need plants 8. Determine types and quantities of plants to order from seed and nursery catalogues. 9. Prune evergreen branches to use in holiday decorating. 10. Continue to rejuvenate overgrown shrubs as weather permits until new growth begins in spring. 11. Hold off on fertilizing indoor plants until spring. 12. Provide houseplants with increased humidity; mist often or place plants over a tray of moist pebbles. 13. Continue to plant prepared bulbs for indoor forcing. 14. As houseplants grow more slowly during winter, increase the time between waterings but do not cut back on the amount of water . 15. Take this opportunity to oil down tools and sharpen mower blades, shears, and saws. |
